Scriptures from: John

A message from Steve Kirk-Smith called “Washing the Disciples Feet”, based around John 13:1-17 and other Bible verses.

The thought of washing someone's feet, or having your own feet washed by someone, can evoke a variety of reactions!! Peter strongly felt that it would be totally wrong for Jesus to degrade Himself and wash the Disciples’ feet. Washing feet was a task that only lowly servants did. Jesus turned the current society norms upside down. He showed that people, including those considered to be high-up in society, need to serve each other.

Other rulers of the age wanted total respect, submission, and did things to show how powerful and all mighty they were. Jesus is not asserting His power and authority. He doesn't need to prove anything. Jesus humbled Himself by becoming human, then acting as servant to those who didn't deserve it, and finally by dying for each one of us. He chose to do this for us!!

People wore sandals in Jesus' time. Their feet got very dirty very quickly on a daily basis. As we move through life, we continually become unclean and dirty from the stuff around us. As The Servant King Jesus cleanses us as He symbolically washes our feet. He tells us to do the same for others.
